So I'm Going To Do This Thing With The Wire Now

The hiatus is OVER! Yeah I know it’s been awhile since I last wrote anything, but it’s just because I’m lazy. I finally updated my technology and bought a new roku which means I’ve been binge watching the backlog of basketball games I had at my fingertips. Now, when I watch games I don’t listen to announcers because they tend to be annoying and boring, so I’ve been re-watching the Wire, which if you don’t know is legitimately the greatest television show of all time. For each of my five teams I’m going to assign a season of the Wire and use quotes from the show to represent their seasons so far. And AWAY!

The Wire Season 1: Chicago Bulls

“What the fuck did I do?” - McNulty

Oh poor poor Derrick Rose, the dignified soft spoken MVP ( © Tony Kornheiser making fun of Mike Wilbon). Watching the first weeks of the Bulls season with the knowledge of Rose’s injury was like watching the 5th season of Angel and knowing (10 year Vampire Spinoff Show Spoiler Alert!) Fred is going to die (which I did recently). You spend so much time just enjoying all the little things they do knowing that soon it‘s all going to end.  For instance watching Derrick Rose do his jump step fake one way turn around the other way baby hook made me so happy, but then immediately depressed since I knew that I wouldn’t be seeing him do that again anytime soon. AGAIN!

So to answer McNulty’s question, nothing Derrick Rose, you did nothing. Much like Bill Walton didn’t do anything. There’s the name Rose never wanted to be associated with, but it seems to be getting closer to inevitable they’ll continue to be. Rose played 2 full seasons and won an MVP, Walton played 2.5 full seasons won an MVP and NBA Championship. Immediately after taking their places in the hierarchy of the NBA the two started getting hurt. With Walton it was his feet, with Derrick Rose it seems to be his knees. Both were burdened by a fan base whose passion pushed problems. Last year Rose was questioned for not playing in the playoffs for the Bulls who had overachieved all year and were running on fumes (to ensure his health for this year…) . Walton was forced with a “day-to-day” label by the Portland medical staff that led fans and pundits to believe that it was up to Walton if he played or not during a playoff push to defend the NBA title in 1978.

The NBA almost didn’t survive without Walton (thanks Magic and Basketball Jesus) , at least we still have Lebron. This injury still sucks though.

“I don’t want to go to no dance unless I can rub some tit” - Lester Freamon

Now what should the Bulls do? With the injuries to Derrick Rose and Jimmy Butler (who is wearing the cursed “day-to-day” label where it seems he’s always almost back, but never practicing or playing) the bulls have been starting Tony Snell and Kirk Hinrich in their stead. Remember that the Bulls are also starting Joakim Noah (looking fully healthy), Luol Deng (Looking like what I always wanted Andre Iguodala to be but who can hit 3’s) and Carlos Boozer (who I’m going to gush about later), with Taj Gibson and Dunleavy coming off the bench. This is a good basketball team and the East is TERRIBLE. They can’t keep starting  Tony Snell and Kirk Hinrich. Which brings up the quote. If the Chicago Bulls are going to continue with the players they have (which their GM says they will, and Gms NEVER lie) and work towards a playoff spot with the possibility of a Derrick Rose return (which Rose hinted at on Thursday 12/4) they need to get a fill in Point Guard. Who knew that letting Nate Robinson walk would kill the Bulls?

“You supposed to be the good cop dump mothafucka” -Preston “Bodie” Broadus

Because it’s a funny ass scene. Because Bodie is my favorite character. Because Carlos Boozer was supposed to be the guy I didn’t like to watch this year.

I came into this season surprised at how consistent  Carlos Boozer was over his career, and watching this season closely I can’t stop myself from loving the Carlos Boozer experience. That dude can straight play basketball. His goofy jumper, his bullying post moves, his ever present rebounding, and yeah he can’t play defense, but when you have Noah and Deng with your back, it’s pretty excusable. And it’s not like he’s a James Harden-esque DH (tribute to Zach Lowe)  where he doesn’t even try to  defense, Boozer always give a shit, it’s just that he has no lateral movement really. What’s really interesting is how Thibs uses him.  In the 3 overtime thriller against the Pelicans (which was an AWESOME game overshadowed by another awesome game that night) the line-up for all 15 minutes of OT was Hinrich-Dunleavy-Deng- Gibson-Noah, Boozer who is hands down the best offensive player on the Bulls at this point couldn’t sniff the court. It makes sense because Thibs wanted defense in the extra quarters, but I just found it interesting.  Then Thursday night whose kicking the crap out of the Miami Heat? Carlos Boozer. The dude is going to get 18-10 every goddamn night no matter what anyone has to say about it.

The Inbounds Passer

Some might say, “Well they were up 5 with the ball and 7 sconds left”

Some might say, “It was the bobhorncatnets, they weren’t going to catch up, and who gives a shit.”

But I say, “It all came down to that inbounds pass and the man that did it.”

All three of us are right, but I’m the most right. 110 percent more right in fact.

It came down to 7 seconds left in the game with the Chicago Bulls up 5 points to the Charlotte Bobhorncatnets (side note: Let’s give a final hat tip to the “Bobcats” the most egotistical sports name in history, they were named so because the owner’s name was Bob, imagine the Mavericks being the Dallas Cubans). The Bulls have the ball in their half of the court and just need to run out the clock. There’s only one man to call in this situation. He’s presently sitting on the bench looking good in a sweet Chicago Bulls warm up jacket. Coach Thibodeau looks in his direction and immediately benches Carlos Boozer. Thibs gives out the play and the Bulls head to run an inbounds play.

Our (read:my) hero takes the ball from the ref, and the play begins. Bodies fly around in a swirling sea of Red, white, whatever blue that is, and I guess orange (seriously what are the Charlotte colors?), but never long enough for an opening. The Referee is diligently counting out the seconds allowed for an inbounds play. The play seems thwarted as every ’Cat is on their man like white on rice (or brown on rice depending on the rice you decide to eat that day). Quickly our hero has to make a strategic move and calls one of the remaining time outs. He looks dejected as he skulks back to the bench. Fresh from the bench he was not able to deliver when his team needed him most. Luckily enough he still had one more chance.

Thibodeau knelt before his men, Derrick, Kirk, Luol, Joaquim, and our hero, and diagrammed his play. By the end the white board was so full of lines and arrows that no one could possibly accurately diagram the play  backwards, and the players were making their way to their positions on the court. This time a slight skip in their step. For this was the time to end the game. This was the time champions are made. Each win matters in a season. It could mean home court in the playoffs, or if the playoffs are even attainable.  A whistle is blown.

The ball is handed over. Movement is incessant around the court. Finally after going through what seems like a billion picks Derrick Rose comes sprinting from towards the half court line. Our hero passes to him. Rose lands on the offensive half of the court but his momentum is pushing over the line for a half court violation and a chance for the Hornbobnetcats, Rose jumps in the air and passes it back to the inbounder. He of fleet foot has quietly taken one step inbounds and has been completely ignored by the defense. He gets the ball and quickly passes it to another Bull across court as the last precious seconds are ticking down. The Bulls victory is literally clinching as another cross court pass ends any hope for the Charlotte Hornbobnetcats to win this game. The Bulls are victorious.

The Inbounds passer in this tale is of course is the one, the only, Mike Dunleavy.

Nailed it.

Rule 76 Part 3: Thunder vs Bucks

Thunder vs.Bucks

There’s only one takeaway from this game really for me that I want to talk about. Russell Westbrook is back.

I’m petty hard on Westbrook mostly for how much I love Kevin Durant. Everything Durant does just makes Westbrook look bad. Think about it. Durant is all finesse, Westbrook all anger, and aggression. Durant is infinitely efficient, Westbrook not so much. This makes it seem that Westbrook isn’t good, which isn’t true. Westbrook isn’t amazing. Maybe we’re all spoiled with how Pippen and Jordan played together. Pippen would fill in all of the blanks Jordan couldn’t, they were perfect together. Westbrook and Durant just aren’t the same way.

That’s mostly rambling though. My point is that Westbrook is back. I didn’t think he could come back this quickly. Knee injuries in basketball aren’t exactly patch em up and put em back out situations. Everyone chronicled Derrick Rose last year and while Westbrook’s injury wasn’t as severe as Derrick Rose’s (meniscus tear vs. acl tear), it’s still a scary injury to come back from. Particularly with Westbrook’s style. His most used move is to use his speed to get ahead of his defender stop on a dime as the defender back pedals away from him and shoot 15 footer. Whether it goes in early will show how devastating Russ will be any given night game 4 vs. the Heat in the finals 2 years ago when Westbrook went bonkers that shot swished all night long)  But the whole stopping on the dime thing hinges on your knees being able to do so. Westbrook has show since he came back that he can do that, and tonight it was like nothing had changed. At one point in the third, Westbrook slashed through the lane with the ball, stopped, hopped to the right took contact and made the shot from 6 feet out. It was vintage Westbrook.

The Thunder are right back at being Contenders in the West.

Rule 76 Part 2: Wizards vs. Cavs

Wizards vs. Cavaliers

Oh those last five minutes. They can be just a bitch can’t they. I only saw that this game was interesting at half time of the Bulls-Pacers, and picked up with 5 minutes left to go in regulation. At the time the Wizards were winning.

I don’t know who that white guy was on the Cavaliers, his name might have been Bellanueva, but he totally owned the Wizards and cut the lead late in the fourth quarter. That has to be the biggest moment of that guy’s life (he would later brick a three). Next there was a pretty gross Wizards possession that ended with Nene taking a 15 footer and missing, Gortat rebounding and missing the put back. The Cavs scored again and the Wizards’ next possession ended with me saying “Oh no not that”

The possession showed a lot of nice movement of the ball, which was nice and ended with John Wall 20 feet from the basket with a wide open look. The 20 footer if you don’t know is statistically speaking the worse shot in basketball, one of the main reasons that Michael Jordan was Michael Jordan is because of how deadly he was from such an impractical shot. John Wall is most certainly not Michael Jordan, and an offensive play and more specifically an offensive play in a tie game in the waning minutes of the fourth game should not end with John Wall taking a twenty footer. Which is why I groaned “oh no not that.” I should mention that I don’t listen to these games, I’d rather listen to a pod cast or music that local play by play if it’s not Harry Kalas. So though Wall missed (as statistically predicted) he was bailed out by a questionable foul and got to the line.

Next in the ugh category came from my fantasy team (the newly minted “Entertainment 7wnty”) sleeper Bradley Beal. Kyrie Irving had just coughed the ball up with under a minute to go with the Wiz up 1. Brad Beal received the pass at half court with a step on the Cavs defense. Just him and wide open space. Then he miss dribbled and the ball went to the token white guy Cavalier and  Cleveland took the lead.

Do you know why it’s called a free throw? Neither does Nene. I’ve been making that joke about Dwight Howard for years, but Nene blew a free throw to take the lead.

Then he made up for it. The Cavs had the ball in a tie game with 24.1 seconds left (enough for the shot clock to stay on at least don’t quote me). Kyrie Irving starts doing Kyrie Irving things, beats his guy, raises up and then Nene pokes the ball out to a Wizard who immediately call time out (with 1 second left). That ball poke was legit clutch and reason number 3432674 why the Wizards are way better when Nene is in the line-up.

Honesty Time: I didn’t watch overtime. The streaming is terrible on my computer, I’ve mentioned this. So I switched from Washington back to the Bulls game, but didn’t realize that the ninety times my stream minorly froze meant I wasn’t live and so when I switched, I saw that the Wizards were already down 7 in Overtime. I didn’t switch back.

Rule 76 Part 1: Bulls vs. Pacers

I mentioned before that my Roku box could not work with the streaming of NBA League Pass package. So I’ve been working on getting a new way to stream and am probably going to fix the problem before Christmas at the latest. My computer can seriously not handle the streaming. It’s terrible. Which is why I’ve just not been able to watch any games. So my plan is to find a way to stream and backtrack a whole lot (I don’t doubt myself on catching up I watched all of Breaking Bad in the 3 days before the premier of the 2nd half of the last season) and write about where the teams are to that point. But tonight Saturday, I had a chance to try to watch some games, and though the streaming was bad. Rule 76: No excuses, play like a champion

Bulls vs. Pacers

I tweeted (or at least tried to tweet) at about halftime “I do believe D-Rose has found his range” (@Kevin_Seamus, follow me, PLEASE! PLEASE!) because boy did he! In the early quarters as the Bulls just annihilated the much vaunted Pacers defense right in the center  of it all was Derrick Rose. deadly accurate 3 point shooter. The bombs were coming from all over too. The first in the corner, the next from the left elbow, then from the top of the key. It couldn’t have come at a better time either. The 2nd quarter was the time that the Pacers had almost made a surge back, but every time a run started (after the three point play by Paul George who previously had been and ICE cold 1-9 for instance) Rose came back with a long three.

I started watching in the beginning of the 2nd quarter when the Bulls had already built a commanding lead, and  just missed out on Mike Dunleavy’s first three, and by the time he came back in during the garbage time 30 point lead, I had turned my attention to OKC-Milwaukee, and ended up missing Dunleavy’s pretty decent game. That’s a couple in a row from my favorite player in the NBA (Yes, I drafted him in fantasy because that’s how I roll).

I was actually kind of surprised to see how much gas Thibodeau used in the third quarter as the lead stayed around 25-30 for much of the quarter. He continued with Rose, Deng, and Noah even with that large of a lead.

Also surprised by the minutes of Kirk Hinrich, this is only the 3rd Bulls game I’ve really watched intently, and Hinrich has been getting a lot of the big minutes situation wise as the nominal shooting guard. Is it because they don’t trust Jimmy Butler yet? Is it because Hinrich has veteran leadership? I don’t know, but it’s worth watching.

Not much of this game was worth watching though, it was a blowout the entire time. I have to blame myself, though the 2nd night of a back to back against the Bulls probably didn’t  help, today I named my fantasy team in honor or Roy Hibbert. My team was originally named “fuck yo couch”, but it just wasn’t the name I wanted, I came up with it on the spur of the moment. After last night’s 8 block barrage by Roy Hibbert (who I drafter happily) I re-dubbed my team “Entertainment 7wenty”. Nothing better than to reference the most positive amazing show on television, but also the center who has shown up several time on Parks and Recreation to either shoot around with Detlef Schrempf or grab shrimp for people. Plus Entertainment 7wenty is where dreams come, they come true! So yeah of course Indiana would lose it’s first game un-entertainingly so,  the day I tribute their Big Man. My bad Basketball Jesus, and viewers at home.

Jonas "Dunk Ensues Thus" Let's Make it Happen

Some thoughts I thunk during the Toronto  Raptors vs.  the Boston Celtics... I think

Can I start calling Jonas Valanciunas Jonas “Dunk Ensues Thus”. I think it’s hilarious. Plus Jonas loves dunking, and the Raptors look better when he dunks and no one can say his last name anyway. This is like a win win win win win nickname. It’s going to be a thing! In the first quarter Jonas jumped up for a rebound tipped the ball up, jumped again grabbed the ball, jumped a third time and dunked it. Must be nice to be young and healthy (knocking on all wood).

I went to the Sixers opener last night and saw Moses Malone, Allen Iverson, and  Bobby Jones. The Raptors had Morris Petersen their all time games leader, awwwww Toronto.

I may not have watched many Toronto games in my life, but that Raptors sign under the base line looks 3 dimensional. I know it’s not but I’m constantly worried it is.

The best play  of the night came from a Wes Unseld- like (I assume wasn't actually alive to watch Big Wes) outlet pass from Rudy Gay standing  by the foul line to the opposite corner of the court. Lowry while about to run out of bounds to grab the pass, ditches the ball to a cutting Demar DeRozan with a huge dunk. I wish I could make gifs. I’m sure some one has already made it anyway so go find it. Describing things with words is so 19th century amiright?

Rudy Gay ended up with 19 points on 18 shots, and just constantly was trying to be so much cooler than what he is. That’s the only way to describe it. At one point the did two dribbles between his legs and tried a no look pass to Jonas (it might not have been Jonas) on the block. This is something that Magic used to do, and Lebron does on a nightly basis. Rudy Gay’s pass went directly to a Celtic who took it the full length of the court and scored. DeRozan was also not a picnic, scoring 13 points on 6 of 19 shooting. The Raptors two best players combined for 32 points while shooting the ball 37 times. This time against a young Celtics team it was enough, other times they probably won’t be so lucky.

Belated Thoughts on Season Opener

To begin with, my quest was hit a major blow on Tuesday when I became aware of the fact that NBA League Pass decided to no longer be compatible with the original Roku box that I have but only worked with Roku 2.0 or 3.0. This would mean that I have to find a more viable option to watching games other than my Jurassic age computer. I only mention this because the frequency of posts that I had hoped will be hurt by this.

So here are some things I thunk from the first game… I think.

Chicago Bulls vs. Miami Heat

Not a good start as Mike Dunleavy’s number one fan in Chicago. My boy started shooting 0-6, which means that until Dunleavy hit a three at the beginning of the fourth quarter he and I had made the same amount of three’s. The good news is that there’s a lot of basketball games left to be played and I continue to be optimistic and will continue to be.

Miami is really good. That 31-5 run at the end of the first quarter and into the 2nd was pretty amazing. Pretty much silencing every dumbass who could possibly think the Bulls would beat the Heat in the Eastern Conference Finals. I ended up seeing the Heat at the Sixers opener, and though the Sixers miraculously won, the Heat were eye-popping in person. They should have won and ended up missing lots of opportunities to run away with it. The best play was the 3rd quarter ending 65 foot three by Ray Allen, where he was fouled but it wasn’t called. Allen received the inbounds pass and took a looping path as he sized up the precise shot he wanted, got to the spot, was met by a Sixer defender, got hit, and just swished the hell out of the ball. It was amazing.

Carlos Boozer was quietly amazing. After the Heat pretty much put the game away in the 2nd quarter there was one Bull out there who just kept plugging away. His name was Carlos boozer. Over the last half of the 2nd quarter Chicago scored 13 points. Boozer scored 11 of them. He came out at the beginning of the third quarter and just kept at it and ended up with 27 points. It was quite impressive effort on a night that almost nothing done by the Bulls was impressive

This game got boring quickly. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out Jimmy Butler's hair before deciding it looks like Eddie Winslow's best friend Waldo's hair from Family Matters.
