The Five Teams Season Experiment Introduction

On October 18, Bill Simmons and Zach Lowe on Grantland.com wrote an article for their rankings of the NBA League Pass Teams, before I finished reading it, my head was spinning about watching basketball for this upcoming season. I turned to  NBA.com to see how much League Pass costs and when the options layed out I could choose between all the teams or just my 5 favorite teams, an idea popped right up in my dome piece. While cheaper the 5 teams package could also direct my nba focus, instead of trying to follow everything  in the NBA I could religiously cover and follow just 5 teams (the favorite thing be damned). Then the question became what 5 teams?

(Caveat. I’m in the suburbs of Philadelphia I’m going to watch the sixers, but not write about it. Also they’re going to be terrible.)

Immediate

Chicago Bulls:

This should be stated at the outset. I am the unabashed number 1 Mike Dunleavy Fan. I tweet about it non stop. It’s getting weird. Maybe it’s because I picked his Duke team to win the tourney twice. Maybe it’s because I remember reading in SI (truth: it might have been SI4Kids) that if he were commisioner for a day he would make every one grow porn mustaches. Maybe it’s because I’m white (it’s not).  I just enjoy the crap out of Mike Dunleavy Jr. and his game.

Also, I don’t know if you’ve heard but this scrappy point guard is back playing for the Chicago Bulls, and is the first All Star Mike Dunleavy has ever played with (at the time, players have gone on to win All stars after separating). Derrick Rose is very much worth the price of admission, throw in a terrifying defense, the possibility Carlos Boozer draws on his hair again, and Jimmy Butler, I’ll happily watch the shit out Da Bulls.

Oklahoma City Thunder:

A lot of their games are going to be on anyway, but I don’t care. What if Kevin Durant just decided to score 40 points every game cause his team literally just needs him to. Westbrook averaged more shots per game than Durant anyway (25  to  22 per 48 minutes) if half of those shots go to KD, that’s a lot more KD who is already one of the most efficient scorers in the NBA. So that could be fun to watch.

Other than that, it might be a little dull with the second unit of um. Um. Um. Let me look it up I guess. Ugh. Derek Fisher, Perry Jones, and maybe just maybe some Hasheem Thabeet action. But remember how Kevin Durant is transcendent? Yes. He. Is.

Up and Coming?

Golden State Warriors

Absolutely. Sign me up. They’re originally from Philadelphia. I love 3 pointers. And Swishes. Hell I love Andrew Bogut. Who wouldn’t love a guy who bought 6 season tickets in the front row and gave them to the best fans in Milwaukee to always cheer. Plus he’s Australian and I’ve been on a weird Australian movie kick recently (that place seems great, and Breaker Morant was awesome).

The downside for this pick is really is that I’ll have to watch Andre Iguodala on a nightly basis, which is for a lot of Basketball nerds a joy, but for me just brings back terrible memories of the days when he decided “yeah I’m the number 1 offensive option on this team I’ll shoot lots of 3’s”. Andre Iguodala is a great basketball player, I understand this. He does a lot of things really well like defend and rebound and he was straight up ROBBED for the dunking title (It’s a fact, Nate Robinson barely tried the first year he won and only did because he was short, Iguodala’s dunks were more creative and difficult, it’s a fact). That doesn’t stop me from remembering the post Allen Iverson Sixers who torpedoed my favorite coach Maurice Cheeks and favorite old school point guard Andre Miller (they were afraid Miller wouldn’t hold up for a multi-year contract, this was 6 years ago). I don’t admit I have problems, both with the Sixers and with overuse of parentheses.

Washington Wizards

There are many people who do not like Tony Kornheiser the former Washington Post writer, former Monday Night Football Anchor, current radio show Host, and Pardon the Interruption  Co-host. I am NOT one of those people. I think PTI is the best TV show that’s on. I’ve been watching it since it aired when I was 13. I started listening to his radio show religiously when I was a freshman in college. They talk about Washington things, so I pay attention to Washington things.

That doesn’t mean it won’t be fun watching the former Bullets, I love watching Beal shoot, I’ve actually always like Nene (drafted him in fantasy when he was Nene Hilario), and their offense with Wall was actually pretty good. Also it’s very fun to watch teams crash and burn (the Sixers are already on fire and burning, the Sixers stuff will stop soon), and this team fired it’s coach 14 games into the season 2 years ago (it may not be 14 I don’t wanna look it up).

Not Particularly Promising But...

Toronto Raptors

I wish I could I tell you. I really wish I could explain it. It’s not Drake, the fact I didn’t know he was Jewish might have cost me my chance on Hip Hop Squares. It’s not the city I’ve never been to Toronto. It’s not Rudy Gay, I don’t particularly like Rudy Gay’s game at all. It’s not Jonas Valencs… Oh Wait! It’s definitely a lot about Jonas Valencsiuinsici9as. I watched him in the Eurocup and in Vegas and he looks awesome. And if Weezer isn’t played all the time in Toronto it should be.

Plus I just like watching one team that’s just not going to be very good and see the players that get the chances they aren’t supposed to get. That’s how you get in on the ground floor of  Jeremy Lin. How many people watched that game against the Nets when he first went off? I didn’t, but I read about it and definitely watched the next game. The craziest shit can happen in basketball and I just love watching it. I’m not going to subscribe just to watch the best teams, I can just watch TNT, ESPN, NBAtv, and ABC for that, I love the littlest things in Basketball.

So I’m going to try to write about them this year. Maybe throw in stats I hear on pod casts or read from the billions of things I read.
